What Is an HDPE Jerry Can Mould?

An HDPE jerry can mould is a precision-machined metal tool used in extrusion blow moulding (EBM) machines to form HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) containers โ€” typically 5 litres to 25 litres โ€” for chemicals, lubricants, agro-chemicals, edible oil, water, and industrial fluids. Unlike PET injection stretch blow moulding (ISBM), HDPE jerry can moulds use the extrusion blow process where a molten HDPE parison is extruded and then clamped in the mould and blown to shape.

Designing a HDPE jerry can mould is more complex than a simple PET bottle mould because of the larger volumes, the use of the extrusion blow process, and the often-critical structural requirements. Our mould designers consider several factors:

HDPE vs LDPE for Jerry Cans

HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) is the material of choice for most jerry cans due to its excellent chemical resistance, rigidity, and impact strength. LDPE (Low-Density Polyethylene) is softer and used for squeezable containers. For chemical jerry cans, HDPE grade 5502 or 5506 (density 0.952โ€“0.957 g/cc) is standard. For food/edible oil cans, food-contact grade HDPE IS:7328 is required.
